Rural health care shortage needs better public policy

More than a third of rural Americans live in Health Professional Shortage Areas. Nearly 82 percent of rural counties are classified as Medically Underserved Areas. Fewer than 10 percent of America’s physicians practice in rural areas. Most rural areas in the nation have a shortage of all forms of health care professionals. Rural medical professionals are also aging. Health care professional educators, state governments, the federal government, rural schools, and rural communities must all do more to address this crisis.
